Southwest Montana Checks All the Boxes
July 6, 2021Montana is the fourth largest state and has one of the lowest populations in the United States. It is fondly nicknamed the Big Sky State. Besides the broad expanse of sky, there is something for everyone – from mountains to plains, towering forests to open grasslands, elevations from 1800 feet to 12,799 feet, and vibrant cities to sleepy small towns.
18 Land Company was started by its founders to help people find and manage their Montana dream. Its name honors County #18 – Beaverhead County – which is the largest County in the State. 18 Land Company specializes in Southwestern Montana farm, ranch, and recreational properties.

But, back to Southwest Montana… Both Bannack and Virginia City were early state capitals because of the gold rush. Exploring these, and other ghost towns in the area can keep you busy for weeks! There is still gold to be found “in them there hills”, along with crystals at Crystal Park on the Pioneer Mountain Scenic Byway and beautiful gem grade sapphires at Granite Mountain near Philipsburg.
Outdoor and camping pursuits could not be better than those found in the massive Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, which spans 3.2 million acres, and covers most of southwest Montana. The Forest has been called “the last best place”. This public land base, when considered with the Bureau of Land Management and State of Montana land in the area is an incredible resource for the public.
For the horse enthusiast, there are a multitude of opportunities and activities. The University of Montana Western Natural Horsemanship program in Dillon is one of the few such college curriculums in the nation. Team roping, ranch sorting, cutting, trail riding, 4-H programs, fox hunting, barrel racing, horse shows, county fairs, back country horseman groups, and about any other horse related activity you can think of can be found here along with some beautiful horse properties! And, of course, the blue ribbon fishery in this neck of the woods is second to none. The famed Big Hole River is one of the few free flowing rivers in the northwest. The Beaverhead, Madison, Ruby, and Jefferson Rivers provide unparalleled recreation. Not to mention all of those small streams and high mountain lakes which are home to cutthroat and brook trout which are incredibly fun to catch! 18 Land Company agents have immense knowledge of these lands, having spent years in the area, and can help you navigate the intricacies of Montana land ownership.
